Audi A3 facelift: Textile door panelling

Paradigm shift in interior lighting: with the new Audi A3 facelift, a milestone in pioneering work rolled onto the road in summer 2024: the brand is the first car manufacturer in the world to integrate a textile lighting system into the door panels – developed by MENTOR and MUNDA.

This innovative lighting system combines technology, design and functionality in a spectacular way: for the first time, light woven into textiles is used in safety-critical areas such as crumple zones, where conventional light guides reach their limits.

The result is a uniformly illuminated fabric that creates an atmospheric ambience with customisable light colours – from soothing blue to energising red – redefining the driving experience. Despite the limited installation space, the textile lighting solution integrates seamlessly into the existing door structure, demonstrating what is possible when visions are realised with precision.

With this groundbreaking innovation, Audi demonstrates how well innovation and design can go hand in hand. MENTOR and MUNDA are proud to have partnered with Audi to open a whole new chapter in automotive interior lighting – a pioneering achievement that sets a new standard for future lighting systems.

The trim strips in the driver and passenger doors and in the rear doors create the desired (colour) mood for the interior of the car – 30 difference colour nuances are possible depending on the vehicle configuration. The specific structure of the customised light guide ensures a dynamic lighting effect. To create a uniform lighting pattern, the colour selected for the decorative door lighting can also be applied to the car’s digital displays.

The first Rolls Royce SUV – the Rolls Royce Cullinan – now includes components made by MENTOR. The cups of the interior door handles are equipped with an individual LED lighting solution, which is both part of the aesthetic design and a functional component. The indirect illumination of the handle cups elegantly and subtly blends in with the vehicle’s ambient lighting while providing a guiding light in the dark.

At BMW, the letter M has been standing for fascination and passion in the premium segment of  sports cars for more than four decades. Impressive engine performance and technical DNA from the world of motorsport have traditionally been accompanied by a special design both inside and out. The M models feature a backlit logo in a prominent position in the headrest, for example, and BMW relies on MENTOR’s expertise in lighting technology for its realization. The perfect appearance of the logo both in illuminated and non-illuminated state was important here.
